A handsome traditional residence located a short walk from Long Island Sound fondly referred to by the Owners as their “country home”. In fact, one of the Owners grew up in Madison and the residence was specifically designed to be a retreat from their fast-paced lifestyle in NYC. Initially, substantial site work occurred to remove more than 40 trees to provide a sunny spot for their new lap pool and shady space for their new stone patio.
The exterior of the house was re-sided and re-roofed, a new septic system and gas utilizes were installed, the breezeway between the house and garage was enclosed and converted to an indoor space with radiant floor heating. New, larger windows were installed in various rooms in the house to take advantage of views and to gain exposure to natural sunlight. We worked closely with a talented landscape architect to create a complimentary serene exterior environment. Through the selective removal of unwanted plants, trees and shrubs, the addition of a natural privacy screen “wall” from the neighbors and the addition of carefully selected flowering plants and trees. The overall effect of the renovations on the exterior produced a well-appointed and maintained residence.
The interior of the residence, however, was transformed to have very clean, contemporary spaces. The careful design and discerning input from the Owners has resulted in a spatial feeling that is museum-like in its quietness, thoughtfulness and quality. The interior is quite refreshing and the new layout has opened up the spaces to one another. The paint colors selected are very soothing and flow easily from one space to the next. The second floor was re-designed to provide the Owners with a very comfortable Master Suite that is complete with a bedroom, a peaceful sitting room, a dressing room with ample his and her closets, a bath and an office area. The addition of a wonderful open porch directly accessed from the bedroom gives the Owners a private space to experience and oversee the tranquil charm of the manicured lawn and pool area.
Attention was placed on every detail through an extensive design process where communications were open and we have become good friends with the Owners.
